This course will build confidence in leading computing in your school. Following on from Leading primary computing, it will allow you to focus on how to develop computing within your school with a focus on developing and supporting others in programming and supporting teachers deliver computing using a context-based approach. There will also be the option of exploring physical computing in the late afternoon of day 1. 

Over this two-day residential, you’ll complete the ‘Developing and supporting programming within your school' and Teaching primary computing through contexts courses.

You'll participate in live face-to-face CPD at the National STEM Learning Centre in York. You'll take-away ready-to-use and successful teaching approaches, supported by the latest research and evidence. 

Completing this CPD will contribute towards recognised certification through the Teach primary computing certificate. You'll be supported along the way by your peers and experienced teaching professionals.

Residential information:

This is a residential course at the National STEM Learning Centre, York. Meals and overnight accommodation are included for participants for the duration of the course.

If wish to extend your stay in York, bed and breakfast will be available at the centre’s on-site accommodation at a discounted rate of £45+VAT per night. Who is it for?

Leaders of computing in primary schools, who have also been on Leading primary computing CPD or who are established in the role and would like to develop key areas and approaches within the curriculum. 

Topics covered

Developing and supporting programming within your primary school –This course will ensure subject leaders are confident in supporting colleagues to understand what primary programming entails; from developing simple algorithms to designing programs to meet specific goals and all the steps in-between. You will develop your understanding of progression across KS1 and KS2 in programming helping you plan for age-appropriate learning and ensuring you are able to support colleague’s understanding of programming within your school.

Teaching primary computing through contexts – Find out why a context-based approach for primary computing may benefit learning, exploring a variety of contexts including topics from across the wider curriculum, stories, real-life and work contexts. You will look at linking core subjects to computing and making the most of a topic-based approach, evaluating how they support the aims of the computing curriculum. Then map your own curriculum planning to identify cross-curricular opportunities relevant to your school.

Sessions will be structured to support teachers to plan engaging activities that meet the needs of the pupils in their school, whilst developing computing skills and knowledge.

How long is this course?

This residential is two days in duration, you’ll complete approx. 12 hours of CPD.

Hands-on experiential learning with the collaborative support of your peers. You’ll receive expert advice and instruction from experienced classroom practitioners.

Outcomes

By the end of this CPD package you will:

  • explain the progression of programming through KS1 and KS2
  • describe effective approaches to teaching programming and identify what this looks like in the classroom
  • support teachers within your school to deliver effective programming lessons within KS1 and KS2
  • teach knowledge and skills in computing through a cross-curricular approach
  • structure teaching using contextualised learning ensuring computing objectives are met
  • identify how to ensure progression in computing when using cross-curricular contexts
  • develop the teaching of computing in your school using contexts relevant to your learners and setting
