This two-day residential equips subject leaders of primary computing with the tools to develop computing within their school, with focus on programming and context-based learning.

What you’ll learn
Over the two days, you’ll focus on how to develop and support others to deliver teaching using a context-based approach. You’ll also explore physical computing and delve into how you can help others improve their understanding of primary programming.
This means, in just two-days of in-person learning, you’ll have completed our courses Developing and supporting programming as well as Teaching primary computing through contexts.
Completing this CPD will contribute towards recognised certification through the Teach primary computing certificate.
You'll be supported along the way by your peers and experienced teaching professionals.
The best part? This course is funded by the Department for Education, making it completely free for teachers at state schools.
Residential information:
This is a residential course at the National STEM Learning Centre, York. Meals and overnight accommodation are included for participants for the duration of the course.
If participants wish to spend the night before the residential in York, bed and breakfast will be available at the centre’s on-site accommodation at a discounted rate. Topics covered
Developing and supporting programming within your primary school
You’ll leave confident in your ability to support colleagues through the world of primary programming; from developing simple algorithms, to designing programs to meet specific goals.
You will develop your understanding of progression across KS1 and KS2 in programming. You’ll leave able to plan efficiently for age-appropriate learning and ensuring you are able to support colleague’s understanding of programming within your school.
Teaching primary computing through contexts
Find out why a context-based approach for primary computing benefits learning. You’ll explore a variety of contexts including topics from across the wider curriculum, stories, real-life and work contexts.
You will look at linking core subjects to computing and making the most of a topic-based approach, evaluating how they support the aims of the computing curriculum. Then map your own curriculum planning to identify cross-curricular opportunities relevant to your school.
Sessions will be structured to support teachers to plan engaging activities that meet the needs of their pupils, whilst developing computing skills and knowledge.
How long is this course?
This residential is two days in duration, you’ll complete approximately 12 hours of CPD.
How will you learn?
Hands-on experiential learning with the collaborative support of your peers. You’ll receive expert advice and instruction from experienced classroom practitioners.
Outcomes
By the end of this CPD package you will:
- Explain the progression of programming through KS1 and KS2
- Describe effective approaches to teaching programming and identify what this looks like in the classroom
- Support teachers within your school to deliver effective programming lessons within KS1 and KS2
- Teach knowledge and skills in computing through a cross-curricular approach
- Structure teaching using contextualised learning ensuring computing objectives are met
- Identify how to ensure progression in computing when using cross-curricular contexts
- Develop the teaching of computing in your school using contexts relevant to your learners and setting
