Embark on an exciting journey into the world of primary computing. You will develop your understanding of computing in the primary classroom and gain practical experience in teaching computing. You will also explore links to the initial teacher training (ITT) core content framework in each session. Inspiring you to become confident in delivering computing in your classroom. The course includes:

  • Curriculum: you will explore the primary computing curriculum finding out key concepts and how to teach them. 
  • Lesson planning and resources: learn how to access valuable teaching resources and plan engaging lessons.
  • Hands-on experience: gain hands-on experience of pupil activities, including practical skills that you can immediately apply in the classroom
  • Classroom management tips: discover effective strategies for managing computing lessons with confidence.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for primary trainee teachers and sets strong foundations for pedagogical development during your Early Career Teacher (ECT) years. 

Topics covered

01 | What is computing? – identify the main themes of the computing curriculum, understand why computing is important and explore how resources match the National Curriculum. 

02 | Planning a lesson – know what’s needed to plan a lesson, understand why schools use a scheme of work and explore the Teach Computing curriculum. 

03 | Information Technology - experience a range of software used to teach information technology and know that computing can support and enhance the teaching of other subjects. 

04 | Programming – find out what an algorithm is, know the main concepts that support progression in programming, write your own programs and understand the vocabulary used in primary programming. 

05 | Digital Literacy – Understand teachers’ responsibility to keep children safe, how online safety links to digital literacy and know that digital literacy should be taught across all parts of the computing curriculum. 

06 | Classroom Management – understand how computing lessons can differ from other lessons and have some practical strategies to reduce the potential for behaviour issues 

How long is this course?

This course is approximately 5.5 hours in duration.

By the end of this course, you will be able to: 

  • Understand the computing curriculum and know why it’s an important subject in a primary setting
