Programming is large part of the computing curriculum and one which is taught in each year group at primary school. This course will ensure subject leaders are confident in supporting colleagues to understand what primary programming entails; from developing simple algorithms to designing programs to meet specific goals and all the steps in-between. 

During this course, you will discover engaging and effective ways to help children develop their ideas around programming, considering how algorithms are developed and can be developed into programs. A range of approaches will be explored, including ‘unplugged’ activities that require no computer and on-screen programming environments such as Scratch Jr and Scratch. You’ll also explore approaches for effectively teaching programming to motivate a wide range of learners. 

You will develop your understanding of progression across KS1 and KS2 in programming helping you plan for age-appropriate learning and ensuring you are able to support colleague’s understanding of programming within your school.

This course is delivered as part of the National Centre for Computing Education.

Topics covered

  • 01 | Understanding Programming look at the bigger picture of the progression of algorithms and programming across the key stages and how to utilise strategies like Semantic waves and pedagogies like PRIMM and Use, Modify Create.
  • 02 | KS1 programming progression apply evidence-based teaching approaches to build children’s understanding of algorithms and programming in key stage 1 utilising pedagogy and Scratch JR.
  • 03 | KS2 programming progression apply evidence-based teaching approaches to build children’s understanding ofprogramming in key stage 2 utilising pedagogy and Scratch. 
  • 04 | Supporting others to teach programming Explore different approaches to raise the profile of programming in the curriculum, supporting and raising the confidence of teachers' delivery.

How long is this course?

This course is a single day involving 5 hours of learning.

You’ll discuss issues with peers and an experienced course leader, comparing practice and learning strategies that are based in evidence. Personalised action planning will help you prioritise next steps for you and your school, ensuring you gain maximum benefit from the CPD.


You will be able to:

  • explain the progression of programming through KS1 and KS2
  • demonstrate how algorithms lead into programs and explain this to others  
  • describe effective approaches to teaching programming and identify what this looks like in the classroom
  • use online tools (e.g. Scratch and Scratch Jr ) to teach programming to both teachers and pupils
  • support teachers within your school to deliver effective programming lessons within KS1 and KS2
