Learning computing with the micro:bit has been proven to raise interest and enjoyment among KS3 learners, and increase the number of girls interested in further study. It provides an engaging way to develop subject knowledge, through fun projects that provide instant feedback to develop programming skill.During this CPD, you’ll explore how the micro:bit, can be programmed to control creative digital projects. With a range of programming environments freely available it supports the transition from blocks to text, meeting the programming requirements of the National Curriculum and preparing students ready for GCSE.The micro:bit is a complete package for physical computing, with in-built buttons, LEDs, and sensors for detecting movement, light and heat. You’ll find out how to setup the device, how to attach add-ons to make use of the inputs and outputs, and how to teach using micro:bit, making use of the free Teach Computing Curriculum.

Who is it for?

This course is aimed at teachers and subject leaders of computing, looking to develop physical computing in the classroom to complement existing approaches.

Topics covered

On this short course you will look at using the micro:bit to raise interest and enjoyment amoung KS3 learners.

You will look at how you can use the in-built buttons, LEDs and sensors built into the micro:bit.

How long is this course?

This online course will take you approximately 2 hours to complete.

Outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the impact physical computing has on engaging students in computing
  • Create simple programs to control the micro:bit and additional components
  • Teach effectively using the free, high-quality physical computing activities in the Teach Computing Curriculum.
