Expanding I Belong to key stage 2: letting more girls know they belong in computer science

We are excited to announce the expansion of our I Belong programme into key stage 2, marking a significant milestone in our mission to inspire and empower young girls to envision their future in computer science. This important step aims to foster a sense of belonging and confidence in computing from an early age, while also supporting teachers in challenging gender stereotypes that often emerge in pupils' formative years.

Why have we expanded the programme to key stage 2?

Research shows that perceptions of certain subjects and careers are shaped during primary school, and by key stage 2, girls are already beginning to exhibit gender-based stereotypes regarding computing. However, this is also a time when many girls report a positive attitude towards the subject. By extending the I Belong programme to primary schools, we aim to support teachers in nurturing this positivity, ensuring that interest in computing is maintained as girls transition into key stage 3.

Sustained intervention is essential if we want to see long-term change both in schools and within the wider tech industry. Expanding the programme into key stage 2 allows us to create a continuous journey through two critical school stages, reinforcing the message that girls belong in computer science.

The importance of early encouragement

Early encouragement and positive reinforcement are crucial in shaping children’s self-perception and aspirations. For girls, this is particularly vital as they navigate societal stereotypes and expectations. Here are key reasons why early encouragement matters:

  • Challenging stereotypes: addressing traditional gender stereotypes early helps girls to see themselves in a broader range of careers, including computing and computer science.
  • Introducing role models: exposure to diverse role models who have succeeded or are thriving in computer science can inspire girls to follow their own passions.
  • Building resilience: encouraging girls to take risks and embrace challenges builds resilience, a key trait for success in a field like computer science, which is rooted in problem-solving.

As part of the programme, we provide an evidence-based course where you can explore the reasons behind the gender gap and learn strategies to address it. You'll discover effective methods to empower girls in computing through your classroom, curriculum, and extracurricular activities.
