Home Teaching - Key Stage 1

This page is designed to help children, supported by parents or teachers, to continue their computing studies while at home at any time including during the summer holidays.

The following resource links will take you to the Barefoot Computing website, all resources are freely available to download.

Support is available

If you have any questions about the topic or any of the lesson resources you can contact us by emailing [email protected].

Lesson 1

Learn how to complete mini missions...

In this activity is split into six computational thinking concepts: algorithms, abstraction,  evaluation, decomposition, patterns and logic. Each concept includes five activities to enable children to get to grips with these concepts.

Lesson 2

Learn how to create a shopping list...

In this activity, children will learn to identify the ingredients they need to make a cake and create a shopping list. In doing so, they develop their skills of abstraction. If you wish, you can also use the activity to develop their understanding of algorithms.

Lesson 3

Learn how to create hand jives...

In this activity, your child/children will create hand clapping, hand tutting (see videos attached) or hand jive sequences of movements. Children break the sequence of actions down into parts and in so doing are decomposing. Children can link this idea to breaking problems down when creating computer programs such as animations or games.

Note – whilst this resource is labelled for children  aged 7-11, it can easily be adapted for younger children by creating simpler routines.

Lesson 4

Learn how to think logically...

In this activity, your child/children will learn how to predict and analyse using the mini mission activities. Five activities are available including noughts & crosses, magic squares, boxes, triangles and bedroom battleships.

Note - these activities can be found on page 6 of the linked resource.

Lesson 5

Learn how to evaluate...

In this activity, your child/children will learn how to make judgements using the mini mission activities. Five activities are available including WWW, being a critic, my daily workout, a new healthy sandwich and being an engineer.

Note - these activities can be found on page 3 of the linked resource.

Lesson 6

Learn how to create algorithms

In this activity, your child/children will learn how to create algorithms by making steps and rules. Five activities are available including cooking, my amazing game, robotify me, timetable and teddy hunt.

Note - these activities can be found on page 1 of the linked resource.
