Five ways you can prioritise your wellbeing during the holidays

The festive break is just around the corner - a well-earned pause after the typically fast-paced autumn term. These two weeks away from the classroom are an excellent opportunity to reset, recharge, and focus on yourself. By taking this time, you can return in January feeling refreshed and ready to support your students with renewed energy and focus. We’ve rounded up five practical strategies to help you make the most of your downtime.

1. Switch off and relax

You’ve worked hard this term, so give yourself permission to truly relax. Whether it’s catching up on sleep, reading a good book, or indulging in a box-set marathon, taking time to recharge is essential. It will do wonders in the long run as you look forward to returning to the classroom.

2. Set work boundaries

As a teacher, it’s easy to feel the pull to prepare lessons or finish marking but remember; the break is there for a reason. If work needs be done, schedule a small, specific window for it and stick to it. The rest of your time is yours to enjoy, so protect it!

3. Take time for hobbies old and new

Make time for what brings you joy. Whether it’s baking, enjoying a winter walk, or exploring a new creative hobby, this season offers a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with the activities that light you up. You might even return to school with a fresh anecdote or a fun recommendation to share with your colleagues and students!

4. Prioritise your connections

The holidays are a great time to nurture relationships with friends, family, or even just yourself. A heartfelt chat with a loved one, shared laughter, or quiet reflection can go a long way in boosting your mood, giving you a break away from the screens and the challenges that teaching can bring.

5. Plan your gentle transition back to school

As your time away from the classroom comes to an end and the new year begins, consider setting aside a moment to ease back into 'school mode.' To do this, you can reflect on your successes throughout the autumn term, outline your priorities for the term ahead, and set meaningful goals for the remainder of the academic year. Even a simple plan can provide clarity and direction, helping you feel more prepared and confident as you step into the new year.
