This course will help new primary computing leaders to clarify their role and develop and implement a broad and balanced curriculum. You will learn how best to lead the improvement of computing teaching and learning, and to ensure assessment and monitoring is consistent across your school.

Identifying where your school is now in computing will enable you to identify and plan for improvement in your school. Building on this knowledge, you will develop a detailed action plan to guide the effective use and development of resources, assessment approaches and you will enable yourself and school leadership to accurately understand the strengths of computing in your school, and sustainably plan for improvement.

Who is it for?

Subject leaders in primary computing who are new to the role, or who aspire to move into it.

If you have already completed this course, or are a more experienced computing lead, then you may also be interested in Leading primary computing- module 2 – remote.

Topics covered

01 | The role of the subject leader – considering the common, and less common, roles undertaken by leaders of computing, helping you to clarify your role through discussion with others in a similar position.

02 | Developing an outstanding curriculum – curriculum intent and implementation, with consideration of age-appropriate progression. You’ll engage with the Teach Computing Curriculum, planning how to integrate it into an appropriate programme of study in your school.

03 | Assessment of computing – you’ll evaluate a range of generic and subject-specific approaches to assessment of computing, both formative and summative, to drive attainment in the subject.

04 | Monitoring and evidencing progress in computing – develop your knowledge of effective monitoring practices within computing to ensure progression. Review the expectations for evidence collection taking account of teacher workload and accountability and learn time-saving ways to evidence progress.

How long is this course?

This is a 1-day course.

How will you learn?

You’ll discuss issues with peers and an experienced course leader, comparing practice and learning strategies that are based in evidence. Personalised action planning will help you prioritise the issues for you and your school, ensuring you gain maximum benefit from the CPD.

Outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Be confident in the role and expectations of a computing subject leader
  • Develop and improve your school’s computing curriculum, its intent and its implementation
  • Use assessment to better know the strengths of your learners, and know how to adapt teaching to support all children
  • Implement effective monitoring and evidencing processes across your school
