Over 1,000 schools engage with NCCE subject matter experts

The NCCE has reached the milestone of engaging with over 1,000 schools through its school engagement programme.

The programme offers fully-funded consultancy and guidance to eligible schools and colleges, provided through a network of computing education specialists. Subject matter experts work with leaders and teachers to identify the needs of the school and then work with them to formulate an action plan for improving or delivering computing and computer science in their school or college.

1,230 schools have now engaged with the programme since its launch in November 2019, and despite the pressures of coronavirus the programme has continued to grow in popularity, with support provided remotely by experts across the country.

“For the first time, since the introduction of the new computing curriculum in 2014, I feel more passionate about teaching computing and I fully understand its role and significance on the national curriculum. Thank you, Pam, for your support in the past months-from someone who now loves teaching computing!” Feedback from St Margaret’s at Hasbury primary school

The school engagement programme offers support to schools or colleges not yet delivering GCSE computer science or who are finding it a challenge to maintain GCSE, and for priority primary and secondary schools (located in Local Authority Districts 5 and 6). It offers teachers and leaders the opportunity to gain bespoke support to enhance their curriculum offer, with funding available to help them achieve their goals.

“Support for teachers to upskill and deliver the computing curriculum was a high priority across all our Trust schools. The SME scheme has enabled us to be guided by an expert in their field, with relevant classroom experience, through to an agreed progression, linked to our curriculum framework and deliver realistic training directly to the teachers.” Alison Hughes - Director of Quality Assurance, KWEST MAT

The school engagement programme is fundamental to the NCCE’s mission to deliver a world-leading computing education for every child in every school in England.
